So if we delete this stuff, then prs look fine, but would it be at all reasonable to keep that stuff around in case we decide to do travis again someday?

Travis is perma-red for almost all jobs, so I don't think it makes sense to keep this stuff in the codebase, especially when it could impact grepability. I think we should remove it, and we can always roll back the files, or grab them from the 2.0 branch - thanks to source control. Basically Travis is broken, and not easily fixed. I don't see any benefit to keep these files around, especially since TC already surpasses Travis today.
