Bug 724239 made it so we can't navigate back.
Bug 776167 wants to be able to navigate back.

e10s windows are able to navigate back.

I'm not sure if the security concerns from bug 724239 are still valid in e10s world. If not, then e10s fixes bug 776167.
As far as I know, navigating to/from about:newtab to another content page in e10s currently switches back/forth between a remote tab and a non-remote tab. So the security concerns from bug 724239 are substantially mitigated.

However, I think we want to change that and make newtab unprivileged (bug 776477) to avoid the need for swapping (which is hacky and leads to weird issues), which should also unblock fixing of bug 776167 more directly.
