The "deleteTempFileOnExit" preference currently controls whether files to be opened with an external application are deleted when the browser exits, but changing that option takes effect regardless of the final location of the file (that can be in the temporary directory or preferred downloads directory) and is also overridden by private browsing windows.

The interaction should be clarified, possibly using a preference with a name based on the current codebase, like "browser.download.keepLaunched". For example, files that are not deleted when the browser exits should not be made read-only by bug 1009465.
