Steps to reproduce:

Update from 33.something to 33.1. I had addon Sync on and I had about 50 addons enabled and several disabled.


Actual results:

Now I only have 35 addons enabled and 2 disabled. Surely, at least 15 enabled addons have disappeared. Among them (as I can remember): Firegestures, and Vimperator.

I the thread http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2888507 people refer to the same behavior. One of them says he's lost Classic Theme restorer, but in my profile, this addon has "survived".

Some people refer to they are using some Avast things - I also do, but I only use the basic Avast antivirus and have never used any avast addon/plugin. I'm aware about the Avast Browser Cleaner, but I've never used it or set it to run automatically. So I don't think Avast is the culprit.

What am I supposed to do to get my addons back? Is there a "local sync backup"

I've tried do disconnect from Sync, restart Firefox, connect again (make sure addon sync is on), let FF sync everything, and restart again. That did not help. I'm using the new sync.

I've restored my addons from a backup and now I see that Avast silently installed an extension named Avast Online Security. However, I'm not sure when did that happen.

There's a fix in case you have a backup of your profile folder (which I do :) ).

- Disconnect from Sync.
- Close Firefox
- go to your FF profile folder (on Windows it is C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\something.default ) and replace the existing "extensions" folder with that from your backup.
- start Firefox; it's gonna ask you to allow installation of all the extensions that have disappeared before, so allow the installation for everything
- restart Firefox
- connect again to Sync (you can leave addon sync enabled, it did not mess up things again for me)

If you do not have a backup of your profile, there's a good chance (untested by me), that after disconnecting from Sync you can just reinstall all the missing addons and turn Sync on after that.

What is important - when I did not disconnect from Sync before replacing the extensions folder, after starting Firefox, I got some addons restored, but I've lost some other addons =)

And one last thing today - I've checked Avast GUI and there was really an option in the Browser Cleanup tool to clean browsers automatically. I'm sure I haven't turned this option on!
