This bug depends in bug 30431 being fixed first I am not suggesting this as the default behaviour as most people will expect the IE behaviour of using the history back and forward. However I think it would be good if there was an option in the mouse preferences panel to link the intellimouse back/forward buttons into the prev/next link elements instead. This would greatly enhance usability when reading a lot of online documentation (and a lot of online docs already use the link element such as those on the Linux documentation project), at the moment the only way I know of using the link element is to actually click on the link toolbar (which can be hidden) there's no keyboard/mouse shorcuts that I know of already. As well as with the intellimouse it could also be linked into the wheelmouse as a separate pref, you can already configure the mousewheel with a specified modifier key to go back/forward through history. Then if someone has an intellimouse explorer which has both these extra buttons and a wheel, they can configure one for the link element and one for history.
Depends on: 30431
Sorry, this would be too incomprehensible for too little gain. Intellimouse Back/Forward buttons, like the mousewheel, should not have any prefs -- they should Just Work. That means they shouldn't be used for Previous and Next when there is something much more frequent and reliable they could be doing, i.e. Back and Forward. Wontfix.
