User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.10; rv:34.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/34.0
Build ID: 20141126041045
Steps to reproduce:
1. In OS X Yosemite, hit apple-key , to enter preferences.
2. Under search tab, change default search to Google (from pushed Yahoo pref).
3. Close prefs window with apple-key w
4. Searches still go to Yahoo, and settings show Yahoo when I go back and check.
Actual results:
Google doesn't stick as the default search option.
Expected results:
Google should have become the default search.
NOTE: If I change the option through the magnifying glass next to the small search box to the right of the URL box I have no problems. It's strictly changing the search default by going directly to the app prefs dialog.

I just reproduced this not 20 minutes ago on a minty-fresh copy of Windows 7 Professional x64. Follow along:
1. Install Firefox 30.0 from local archived installation file
2. Modify user search preference (I also updated the homepage)
3. Open About Firefox screen to trigger update
4. Restart Firefox and be irate to see results from Yahoo again

I should also disclose I installed add-ons and restarted the browser via 'Restart now' link between steps 3 and 4. (Specifically: adblock edge, noscript, ghostery, & requestpolicy)

The initial description doesn't mention Firefox 30, only 34.
If you have ever used Firefox 34 or later and then use an older version on the same profile, default engine changes made in that older version won't be seen by Firefox 34, due to the changes we made in bug 1029148.

Good observation. I am seeing the problem you describe but without having previously used Firefox 34. It's not this issue though, my mistake.

I'd also check for the presence of a search addon and/or red "Y!" favicon for Yahoo!. It goes by a variety of names including search.me, and can result in the behaviour being seen. It can be installed by various sw clients, including cnet downloads (not Firefox) and bittorrent, among others.
Any addons installed?
