Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; rv:35.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/35.0 SeaMonkey/2.32
Build ID: 20150112201917

Steps to reproduce:

Plugins or overenthusiastic html5 pages can sometimes intercept hotkeys e.g. google android store https://play.google.com/store won't you let you use "/" (quick find) hotkey, it is intercepted by the search input field or you cannot open a new tab with ^t when youtube video is playing.

I'd like Seamonkey (or Firefox - this problem is present in all Mozilla browsers) be the first to get and process keyboard events so that hotkey operations cannot be affected by documents opened in the browser. Probably is is a good idea to make an easily accessible swicth between the old and new behavior so that web sites relying on hotkeys used by Seamonkey won't be broken by this change.
NOT (no longer?) reproducible with official German SeaMonkey 2.46 RC (Build 9) (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:49.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/49.0 Build 20161213183751 (Default Classic Theme) on German WIN7 64bit:

1. Visit https://play.google.com/store
» Page opens with unpredictable contents (latest games, whatever)
2. type "/"
» Status Bar shows something like "Start -- Find text while you type"
3. Continue immediately typing search string "rede"
» "rede" in "Redeem" will become highlighted.

@Reporter: Still a problem for you? If “yes”, please contribute a new step by step instruction.

Still a problem in 2.48.a1 (User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:51.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/51.0 SeaMonkey/2.48a1 Build identifier: 20160818003002)

1. open https://play.google.com/store

2. press / - search field in the web page gets the focus, future keystrokes will appear there. "Starting -- Find text as you type" messaged does NOT appear in the status bar and find as you type is not activated. Find as you type is set to any text in browser settings, although settings it to links only changes nothing.

It is not linux-related - I first observed and reported it on windows, not profile- or addon-related, and it is reproducible in firefox 50.1.0, not just seamonkey.
