Details

A java applet apeared as white (it worked in IE6), when I clicked on the applet
it opened the page
"http://home.netscape.com/plugins/jvm.html?mimetype=application/x-java-vm". I
then clicked "Java 2 Windows Plug-in". Mozilla then opened the "Software
Installation" window. Once the download was complete, the Java installer
started. It installed fine. Mozilla then showed an error box and quit.

Mozilla claims that it's installed (about:plugins , MOZILLA\plugins\NPOJI600.dll
, Java Plug-in 1.3.0_01 for Netscape Navigator (DLL Helper) )

Yet Java applets still apear white and popup the Java 2 download page.

I've tried to install it by downloading the file and installing it. I also
followed the intructions at
http://www.gerbilbox.com/newzilla/mozilla/usingmoz07.php yet I'm still stuck.

I've search everywhere but havn't found anything.
I think the instructions in newzilla have changed,
I remeber them to be - put all the files NPJava*.dll
and NPOJI600.dll in the plugins section.
Anyway I have the following files in the plugins folder and it works for me.
NPJava11.dll
NPJava12.dll
NPJava131_01.dll
NPJava32.dll
NPOJI600.dll
I have
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Win98; en-US; rv:0.9.6+) Gecko/20011130
Reporter:
You have npoji600.dll in your plugins directory ?
Can you see Java in about:plugins ?
Have you enabled Java in edit\preferences\advanced ?
Have you restarted mozilla after you installed Java ?

Matthias Versen (Matti),
yes, yes, yes, yes. (I even resarted my PC)

Itamar,
That seems to have fixed the problem of java working.

However, why the Mozilla update agent failed to install it still exists.
I'm not sure mozilla updater should install the plugin by itself.
I just think that maybe the instructions at newzilla are wrong.
The Mozilla Updater downloaded and ran the java setup from netscape when after
I clicked the java applet. (it opened http://home.netscape.com/plugins/jvm.html?
mimetype=application/x-java-vm , then the updater ran when I clicked on the
Windows button).

So to the new Mozilla user it appears to be installing it.
I think this is a duplicate of 100393, since both are about Win98 java install.
Marked duplicate of 100393.
