After selecting the non-default engine, do you start the search using alt+click on the engine icon, or alt+enter?
(in my comment #1, I meant alt-click on the engine icon)

I asked because I can reproduce the problem with alt+click, but I can't reproduce it with alt+enter.

"no longer" in the bug summary seem to indicate this is a regression, which isn't possible if we talking about clicking icons that didn't exist before.

Being able to press alt+enter to open in a new tab is useful, but if you are clicking, there's already ctrl/command+click that opens in a new tab, so I'm not sure what's really wanted here. We took care of fixing alt+enter and ctrl/command+click in bug 1106101.

It works with Firefox 34, but not 35 or 36.

Well, that points to bug 1106101 then.
Alt+Click is not a standard behavior for opening links in a new tab. Assuming Alt+Enter and Cmd/Ctrl+Click work, this is WONTFIX/INVALID.
