Bug 1156253 will make us compress pings with lz4 when saving to disk. Because we use a non-standard lz4 format, we want this to move over to gzip compression so pings can be inspected using non-standard tools.

I imagine you, of course, meant "so pings can be inspected using *standard* tools". See also bug 1209390.
