The problem: I generally have ~20 channels opened. The only way I have of knowing what happens on each channel is to switch to the corresponding tab. That takes lots of time. The LimeChat IRC client has a solution to this that I find quite convenient. The main window offers a zone that displays all ongoing conversations from all channels I have opened. Clicking on anything in that zone lets me switch immediately to the channel. See screen shot for an example.

Just to make sure I understand this right: this area essentially displays the union of all messages in all open conversations?
On the behalf of Florian: Closing bugs related to the Instantbird UI as WONTFIX, as the development of the standalone chat client Instantbird has stopped. Instantbird users are encouraged to migrate to Thunderbird. The user interface of instant messaging in Thunderbird will feel familiar, as the Thunderbird IM support started as a fork of Instantbird.
