Details
"When I fullscreen flashplayer and hit alt-tab, the flashplayer instance stays fullscreened behind my browser, so I can just alt-tab back to it whenever. With HTML5, if I fullscreen and hit alt-tab, the video goes back to regular (not full screen)."

Really? It seems to me that the case is just converse. Flash player exits fullscreen when switching window, while HTML5 fullscreen stays.

Youtube Flash Player addon does a fairly different thing. On other video website based on flash player, flash exits fullscreen when it loses focus. However, it seems that addon creates an independent window for the flash player, so that it won't exit fullscreen when switching to other window.
I bet that user met this problem when he/she was watching a video still played in flash player, instead of the HTML5 player.
