Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:37.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/37.0 Build ID: 20150415140819 Steps to reproduce: Create a few bookmarks and group them into a folder on the bookmarks toolbar. Click the folder, then ctrl-click one of the bookmarks. Actual results: The bookmark is opened in a new tab and the bookmark folder is closed. Expected results: The bookmark should be opened in a new tab and the bookmark folder should remain open so that additional links can be clicked (as long as it has focus).
1. In the address bar, paste the following, then press Enter: about:config?filter=browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground 2. To bypass the warning, press the big button labeled “I'll be careful, I promise!”. 3. In the search results, double-click “browser.tabs.loadBookmarksInBackground” to set its value to “true”.

This report conflates two issues in one. The part about the menu closing is bug 260611. For that feature, you can try the Stay-Open Menu add-on. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/stay-open-menu/
No conflation as this report doesn't mention foreground/background issues and is unrelated to 331666. The setting was already in place. The stay-open-menu addon resolves the issue for now, thanks.
