So this didn't actually end up working in the way I intended because it looks
like individual subdecoders actually need to have ReadMetadata called on them
anyway (i.e. ReadMetadata is side-effect-y), so this doesn't allow us to
remove the ReadMetadata call from subdecoder initialization in the way that
I'd hoped. It sounds like jya is reworking this code and might be able to
build on this idea though - we'll talk about that shortly.
