Aries device, proper SIM card and service
-Open the dialer
-Open the call log.
-Tap on the number you want to call (I assume it is in there)
-Talk, talk, talk,
-When the conversation is over, remove the phone from your ear to hang up.
Observed
-The call log is displayed
-The call is still going until the other side hang up.
Expected
-I have the UI to hang up... until the call is properly terminated by either side.

indeed as soon as the call connects the call control UI hides.

If I show the call control UI (it is complicated, I had to think) then it doesn't disappear until I actually terminate the call... as expected.

Weird, this kind of issue should be seen on the daily smoketest. I remember reproducing something similar once, but that was because the phone was a bit far from my ear and the screen turned back on while I was talking.
But based on your comment 1, I'm assuming this also happens when you look at the phone without putting it next to your ear. So an event might be wrongly sent to the system app that hides the callscreen. Can you provide a logcat with Gaia debug traces enabled?
Also, if you want to hang up, you can to bring back the call screen with the notification center.
