It is for example done on OS X, maybe some Linux Desktop Environment: when headphones are plugged in, audio levels are saved and switched to those saves from the previous time headphones were plugged in.
When headphones are plugged out, headphones audio levels are saved and those without headphones are restored.
This would be very useful especially for peoples using noisy things and that never want to get this on speakers, while it would be appreciated on headphones.
In a few words: a profile for the phone itself, and another one when something is plugged into the jack.
