Every single time I try to use Mozilla on my mac since I did the update, it insists I have not, in fact, updated and that I need to update and restart Firefox, which is becoming a serious nuisance and almost makes me rather I use IE instead.

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:39.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/39.0
Build ID: 20150630154324
Steps to reproduce:
I downloaded Mozilla Firefox on my new Macbook Pro. I automatically was informed that there was an update (Firefox 39.0) and that I needed to download, install, and restart Firefox. This so-called update will alert me several times while I am on Firefox that there is an update (again, Firefox 39.0), and repeatedly pop in my view saying to install and restart.
Actual results:
I have, since the first time I downloaded Firefox on my Macbook, near the beginning of July, repeatedly downloaded and installed, then restarted Firefox. Sometimes it takes a minute or two to reopen my browser session, while other times Firefox will start up immediately, only to then inform me I need to update Firefox to Firefox 39.0.
Expected results:
It should have updated the first time and stop bothering me about further updates until the next real update.

Reporter, could you answer the following questions?
1. What version of OSX is installed on this Mac?
2. Where did you download Firefox? Please provide the URL.
3. How many user accounts exist on your system?
4. Is the user account that installed Firefox the same that's being prompted to update Firefox?
Thanks!

1. OS X Yosemite
Version 10.10.4
2. Went to download Thursday July 2, 2015 through:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac
which directed me to download from:
https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/new/?utm_source=getfirefox-com&utm_medium=referral
3. I am the only user account existing on my system. This is a personal computer.
4. This user account is that installed Firefox is the same that is being prompted to update Firefox. I have no such issue on my, rather much older and beat up, ASUS laptop. I even went to the website I downloaded it from to be certain on the Mac just now and it said: "! Looks like you're using an older version of Firefox. Update to stay fast and safe."
Thanks for your time.

All right, thanks! Let's do a few more things:
1. Can you open Firefox > About Firefox (right next to the Apple icon at the top of the screen) from the menu and attach a screenshot of it to this bug report?
2. Please open a Terminal window (Applications > Utilities > Terminal.app) and enter: open ~/Library/Caches/Mozilla
3. Please describe the folder structure that you see there. It could look something like:
> updates/Applications/Firefox/updates/0
4. Assuming the folder structure looks like number 3 above, please attach all of following files to this bug if present on your system:
> updates/Applications/Firefox/updates/backup-update.log
> updates/Applications/Firefox/updates/last-update.log
> updates/Applications/Firefox/updates/0/update.log

The screenshot for Firefox > About Firefox:
Firefox
38.0.5
The folder structure looks like:
updates/Volumes/Firefox/Firefox/updates/updates.xml
updates/Volumes/Firefox/Firefox/updates/0/backup-update.log
updates/Volumes/Firefox/Firefox/updates/0/last-update.log
So, Firefox seems to have been the same as it's been since I first downloaded it, whereupon I was immediately informed I needed to update to 39, which I have tried, to no avail. Downloading, installing, restarting - it likes 38, and refuses to change.
I wonder if I need to do a complete uninstall of Firefox 38.0.5 and then install 39 on its own.

Thanks for the additional info.
1. In Terminal, can you type: open /Volumes
2. Could you describe what you see? Is there a folder "Firefox", or do you have an external drive like an SD card attached to your Mac that's called "Firefox"?
3. If there's a folder "Firefox", do you recall creating this folder when first installing Firefox?

I opened /Volumes in Terminal - it appears to be an SD card, same as the one sitting on my desktop - see screen shot attachment. I had tried removing the one on the desktop before, upon noticing it after the first couple of requests to update, thinking I could replace it with the new download (which would simply make a second SD drive lookalike on the desktop.)

Your screenshot seems to indicate that you are running Firefox from the downloaded and mounted .dmg file. A common way for applications to be installed on OSX is to drag them from the .dmg to the Applications folder. You should be able to resolve your issues by dragging the Firefox.app to /Applications. Once you've done this, simply start Firefox.app from /Applications and attempt another update. It should complete successfully.
The full instructions can be found at the URL that you provided in comment 3:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-download-and-install-firefox-mac
You may read up on .dmg files and the way to install applications from a .dmg on OSX here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/177619/how-to-install-applications-on-a-mac-everything-you-need-to-know/
(see the section on DMG files)
Please let me know if this resolves your issue.

I had actually done it correctly the first time, following the instructions to the letter on the page. It simply had failed to follow through, which is why I had been surprised when the Firefox drive icon was on the desktop. I eventually did an uninstall of Firefox from the apps folder and any copies then reinstalled it, again following the same directions and verifying it was no longer on the desktop immediately after. Thank you for your help.
