Details

From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:0.9.7) Gecko/20011221
BuildID: 2001122108

I include the html
<link rel="shortcut icon" href="images/page_icon.png" type="image/png" />
In the <head> section of the above page, and mozilla displays the shortcut item
listed. However it disappears, if say, I click on "Astronomy Links" link, and
then go back.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to page. See icon loads (black with blue circle)
2. Go to "Astronomy links"
3. Go back. See how icon has gone

Expected Results: Showed the icon again
PS You may need to do this a couple of times before it forgets the icon (try
clicking on another of the links on the page and go back).

Isn't this a by-product of the fact that these images are stored in the cache
just like any other element? If so, then if the images fall out of the
browser's cache due to whatever algorithm is used, then they would disappear
from the menus until they are retrieved from the web site again, right?

I don't think this the same as the duped bug. The icon isn't there on the
address bar when the page is reloaded. Even a shift+reload doesn't get it back.
If it's not in the cache, surely mozilla will load it when it sees it hasn't got it?
Yeah, I agree that it seems different, although it's possible that there's a
relationship. In this case, you're talking about the icon in the address bar
itself, whereas the other is mostly about bookmark icons.

I used to see behavior like you are reporting at http://www.mattdm.org/ , but in
recent builds, it works fine there. However, I still see it at
http://www-xray.ast.cam.ac.uk/ .
I don't feel this is the same bug as the one it's marked as dup (see my previous
comment). Anyone knowing how the icon system works is welcome to educate me,
however!

This is probably the same problem as bug 109959, although observed somewhat
differently.
