When Autoconfig parsing fails, there used to be an error popup.

Now it just fails with no error.
Taking.

Oddly it works in a build that I build myself, but doesn't work in any shipping builds (nightly, etc.).

My build is NOT debug.
The code is here:

http://mxr.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/source/extensions/pref/autoconfig/src/nsReadConfig.cpp#68

My guess is that using the promptService this early is failing on a release build for some reason...

Tracking for 43+ and marking all current releases as affected.
I have been unable to find anything that would break this and I have been unable to debug since if I build a local build (release or debug), it works.

It only seems to fail on official builds. (I haven't tried a try server build yet).
Wontfix for 43, maybe this is not worth tracking if it's been a regression since 34 and no one else is complaining. We can still fix it of course, maybe aiming for the next major ESR (45).
Given that this issue has been wontfix'd for so long and that we are halfway through Beta44 cycle, wontfix'ing for FF44. I don't see the need to track this one any further. Release management team will be happy to uplift a fix when ready.
This is in 45esr already, dropping the 38 flag.
We're getting rid of the popup anyway in Firefox 62.
