As part of the changes for new mail notification, we are planning on adding an
icon which shows up in the windows system tray when you have new mail. Mousing
over the icon shows the # of new messages for each account that has new mail.
The icon goes away when you read your new mail.

I'll be checking this feature in using the old 4.x icon which was a white
mailbox with a red flag on it for now.

The icon needs to be a .ico file which seems to be the requirement for icons in
the system tray.
adding the icon keyword.

This is just a plain 16 color graphic. Note that all windows systray icons
should be 16x16 (if it's a multi-size icon Windows automatically uses the wrong
size and scales it down) and support 16 colors. Windows XP users may be happier
with a truecolor icon, as was done for AIM.

Is there any reason why we can't have an animated icon like NSNOTIFY does - the
flag waving? Makes it a bit easier to see.
Animated.

Oh, please, no...
I'm serious. It's not the eye candy that appeals to me it's practicality. Before
Moz had biff I used NSNOTIFY from NS (with the waving flag) but when biff was
added to Moz I started using that instead. On my 22" monitor at work I always
noticed the motion in the NS icon as soon as it appeared even though it was only
out of the corner of my eye, but not with the static Moz icon.
The icon would be better if it was (un-annoyingly) animated because the tiny
mail icon otherwise is too easily overlooked.

It would be nice (and easy?) if we could just copy the animated icon from nsNotify.

Another *vast* improvement would be if the *number* of new mails were written
onto the icon (like in nsNotify!?).

PS. Could someone change OS to "All"?
IMHO, I think that the icon as attached (see attachment already on this bug) is
good...but I would simply cycle between the unadorned icon and this one,
changing the icon about once a second. Possible is to also make the dot
"neon"... this may show up even better. I honestly don't know yet.
I think we need an icon that is...

1. Visible (but not animated, that is just pukish IMO -- another possibility for
Windows might be to make the traditional caption bubble appear over the icon as
an option...)
2. The right size (I think the current icon is scaled down to 16x16 by Windows)
3. Available in 16 colors and true color.

We need to put some quality into these icons, since they're a significant part
of the user interface. Any artists care to give it a try?

ADT2 per ADT triage.

Looking at the URL
<http://www.mozilla.org/mailnews/specs/mailnotify/#IndicatorIcon>, I see icons
that are, in the interest of simplicity, impossible (let's not worry about
finding some obscure API for differently sized icons). The limitation is 16x16
pixels, no more, no less. However, the icon I saw there was decent, and I'm
tweaking it and making a multi-layered .ico file out of that.

As the attached GIF animation by Vincent van Bacon clearly shows, the current
"new mail" biff icon in the system tray is very frightening.
I hope it is that icon there are plans to replace?

oh dear... think i found a new bug. The upload never finished. Then reloaded bug
to see what happened...and it seems it was uploaded after all. In the meanwhile
the upload window prompted to log in. Weird.

the icon has been replaced in the trunk. I'll see approval for the 1.0 branch.

Verified FIXED on the trunk:

This new icon appeared with build 2002-06-11-04 using:

Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows XP (98 still suffers from bug 134745.
Status: RESOLVED → VERIFIED
Um, is the new icon a 32x32 being resampled to a 16x16? It has that "muddy"
appearance typical of such a mistake...
Nope, just a really ugly 16 color icon. Windows' icon handling sucks.
Please land the replaced icon on the 1.0.1 branch. Once there, remove the
"mozilla1.0.1+" keyword, and add the "fixed1.0.1"
Keywords: mozilla1.0.1+
checked into the 1.0.1 branch.
Verified FIXED on the branch with:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020617
Netscape/7.0 builds on Windows 98, Windows XP and Windows 2000.
