Description

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:40.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/40.0
Build ID: 20150812163655

Steps to reproduce:

Update to 38.2.0 and then re-open Thunderbird.

Actual results:

Tbird took a long time before it finally showed the UI but it is missing the new Calendar/reminder feature that was added recently. The release notes make no mention of it being removed from Thunderbird.

Expected results:

The calendar feature should have remained present.

From which version did you update to TB 38.2.0?

Based on your browser signature above, you're on Win XP I assume - correct?

For debugging, can you please enable extensions.logging.enabled in the config editor, restart TB and attach all the messages you get displayed in the console (ctrl+shift+j) to this bug?

I am on the normal Upgrade Path for Thunderbird. I was advised that version 38.2.0 was available in version 38.0 (??) and allwed it to update. Following the update the calendar was missing. Please note that I didn't install Lightning manually.. It was installed during a normal update from a prior version 37.x (I think) to 38.x as noted in the release notes for that upgrade. I assumed at that point that a calendar utility was going to become an integral part of Thunderbird going forward.

I am including the Error Console messages as requested by @MakeMyDay but it is problematic since I cannot bulk copy the Error Console dialog results and have to copy and paste each code individually (this would seem to be a place where the developers could make it easier for users to provide this information by allowing a bulk copy (CTRL+A , CTRL+C)..

Here are the error codes:

Thanks. Can you please check, whether the folder D:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\distribution\extensions\{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} exists on your system and this is not empty?

As you have your programm folder not on C:\, can you please also provide some information, which file system C: and D: partitions are using?

Are you running TB in a profile with admin priviledges?

One more thing: What are the other add-ons, you're running?

Folder D:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\distribution\extensions\{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} does indeed exist and is populated with the following:

08/15/2015 08:25 A <DIR> .
08/15/2015 08:25 A <DIR> ..
08/15/2015 08:25 A 721 app.ini
08/15/2015 08:25 A <DIR> calendar-js
08/15/2015 08:25 A 1,498,847 chrome.jar
07/12/2015 08:18 A 5,725 chrome.manifest
08/15/2015 08:25 A <DIR> components
08/15/2015 08:25 A <DIR> defaults
08/15/2015 08:25 A 1,769 install.rdf
08/15/2015 08:25 A <DIR> modules
08/15/2015 08:25 A <DIR> timezones

Also, C: and D: are using NTFS and they are on two separate physical discs. I am running with Admin privledges and the following add-ons are currently in TB (but not all are enabled):

Enabled: Signature Switch 1.6.13, Shockwave Flash 18.0.0.232

Installed (??) but NOT enabled: Enigmail 1.8.2, ImportExportTools 3.2.1, Adobe Acrobat 11.0.8.4, AmazonMP3DownloaderPlugin 1.0.18.1, Garmin Communicator Plug-In 4.0.3.0, Google Earth Plugin 7.1.2.2041, Google Talk Plugin 5.41.2.0, Google Talk Plugin Video Renderer 5.41.2.0, Google Update 1.3.28.1, Java Platform SE 7 U79 10.79.2.15, Microsoft DRM 9.0.0.4503, Quicktime Plug-in 7.7.5, RealNetworks Rhapsody Player 1.0.3.603 (+ DLL), Windows Presentation Foundation 3.5.30729.1

By you questions is it safe to assume that no other TB users experienced this issue with the latest update??

Comment 7

Thanks. It seems not to be a genral problem. We had a few reports on this for 38.0 and 38.1 already, but haven't been able so far to identify the root cause as this seems to be dependent on the user setup. Non standard places rsp. different partitions for application and profile may be related.

And just do be sure: There is no folder C:\Documents and Settings\David Denby\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\hk1ohxb5.default\extensions\{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} ?

For now, you can work around the problem by installing Lightning by yourself from within the add-ons manager.

There is and "extensions" folder under C:\ ... App Data but it does not contain a sub-folder by that name.

This is just a thought, but have you considered that the latest version of TB has a provision that makes a user specifically "authorize" the installation of add-ins?? (and maybe is skipping the installation of Lightning because it thinks that it isn't authorized?)

I tried downloading the latest TB (not Lightning) and installing it manually.. the resulting TB UI also didn't have the calendar. Next I went to Tools\add-ons and tried to install it (Lightning) manually.. The first attempt didin't work, but on the second try, it seems to have installed.

I had been under the impression that the *new* TB had a calendar "baked-in", but if what you are doing is programmatically installing Lightning during the TB update process, then you latest change making it more difficult for add-ins to take root without user authorization MAY have something to do with the problem I am experiencing. Just a suggestion.

That shouldn't matter iirc as this is an installation from distribution folder which comes with TB installation. But can you check your config editor for the pref extensions.installDistroAddons? It should either not exist or be set to true.

But you mentioned that you installed TB manually - do you just mean a fresh installation in opposite to an automated update or has TB previously been installed by software distribution (assuming you are in an organization)? Did you do the new installation again on D or in the Windows default location on C? If the former, would installing it on C let show up Lightning directly after the installation?

extensions.installedDistroAddon.tbtestpilot@labs.mozilla.com = true
extensions.installedDistroAddon.{e2fda1a4-762b-4020-b5ad-a41df1933103} = true

(from what I can tell in AppData profile, the second entry has to do with the calendar)

For the installation of TB: I did not uninstall it first, downloaded the Setup from your web site, ran the setup, allowed it to use the D: drive location when the dialog appeared (pre-populated with "D"), no change Lightning still not there. Then I manually added it from tools\add-ins.

I have no idea about installing on C: as I don't run it from there. I HAVE to point out that it successfully installed the calendar in your earlier 37/38.x releases. ( don't remember when it first appeared (version number) but it worked OK at that time and I haven't changed anything since except to allow the updates that you (Mozilla) recommends.

This error (uninstalled Lightning) on a second PC running Win 7 and updating from 38.1.0 to 38.2.0.. Oddly when I updated yet a third PC (running XP) from a much earlier version of TB (35,x or 36.x) it installed the calendar during the update.

I'm not sure if this is helpful or not but I thought I would pass it along just in case.
