It hang permanently till i killed application in task-manager
you solution to disable the add-on worked altho it took me 3 trys to get thunderbird started in safe mode (only started without asking) now after i disabled all add-ons it works without freezing.
tomorrow i will try that on my friends PC and hopefully it will work as well
(i will try to see which add-ons she has and try to narrow down which could have caused the problem)
thank you for your help!

Hi,
thanks to your advice with the start in safe mode / disable add-ons i managed to fix the thunderbird on my friends/kollegues PC as well. (sorry, i really didnt know how to start thunderbird in safe mode, i really will keep that in mind now! i promise)
i checked which add-ons are on my friends PC and could have possibly failed - i made 2 screenshots and uploaded them here - maybe that helps

Add-ons my friend had to see what made thunderbird freeze
plugins don't normally cause an issue.
Did you delete any extensions after you got it started in safe mode?
Is lightning enabled or disabled? And do you have an lightning calendar events defined?
Flags: needinfo?(tanja.kluth)
i deleted lightning now on both PCs
(it is not really needed and it wasn't used at all - no calender events defined)
and we have no more issues
thunderbird is working fine now

odd
Product: Thunderbird → Calendar
Version: 38 → Lightning 4.0.2
Can you please open the TB config editor, search for calendar. (including the dot) and provide all the entries you get for both of your TB installations? You might mask any private information, as long you don't skip the entire entry.

What did you update from?
@MakeMyDay ow i never did that before, can i export the list somehow? well i added it as a screenhot (there is not supposed to be private data, because we didnt use the calender) this is only my entry i have to see if i can reach my collegues PC to picture it from there as well

@ Magnus Melin: honestly i dont know, i HAD it set to autoupdate so it updated that morning on start (i disabled that now!) i uploaded another screenshot concerning updates - does that help?

I have also been having this problem, especially when coming out of sleep / standby, after letting Tbird autoupgrade to 38.2.0. About 75% of the time following a freezeup, the thunderbird.exe process must be manually killed in Windows Task Manager before I can get any further. Thunderbird is also freezing about 80% of the time waking up from sleep, and is sometimes also freezing after the machine is simply left on and idle for a period of time.

The usual new-email notification dialog often accompanies this freezeup if new messages were received before Thunderbird locks up. It appears completely blank in a freeze situation, however, and usually will not go away until thunderbird.exe is killed in Task Manager.

I am on Win7 SP1. Extensions off / safe mode makes no diff. Am seeing what happens when I disable Lightning.
I think that thunderbird is actually not frozen, only its window is not refreshing. I have the same problem on a win7 computer: the thunderbird window does not seem to register any click, and I have a permanent white rectangle where tb usually notifies of new messages.

But if I do something (say double-click to open a message), then simpy move the window, it refreshes and the message is open. Same if I close a message, mark it unread,... everything works, but the window does not refreshes until I move it or (un)maximize it.
Interesting; I could not get Thunderbird to do anything, but I guess I didn't try hobbes' solution.

I have not had any further trouble with 38.2.0 since disabling Lightning.
Looks like I spoke too soon; after several days without incident post-Lightning disabling, Tbird just froze on me again with my machine coming out of sleep. I tried hobbes' technique this time, got one message to open, but from there Tbird became completely nonresponsive again and would not be re-roused until killed through Task Manager.

According to Bug 1196662 Comment 81 it seems this is just one effect from a core bug that affects sleep mode. Bug 1196662 Comment 81 suggests a workaround that you can test.
Hi,
Same problem here, with several Win 7 pro 64 bits computers (TB 38.2 and Lightning 4.0.2) and one Win XP machine.
Seems not to be "sleep mode" related, as it offen happens when sending mails.
My wife's computer (winXP) exhibits the same behaviour as Hobbes reported. It appears to freeze, but moving the window causes it to refresh. She has no add-ons other than Lightning (which I believe I've deleted) installed or activated.
If you are seeing freezes and problems WITHOUT Lightning/Calendar enabled, then your problem is straight up Bug 1196662, not this bug.
Summary: Thunderbird freezes after update to version 38.2.0 → Thunderbird with Lightning add-on enabled freezes after update to version 38.2.0
Whiteboard: [without Lightning add-on, see Bug 1196662]
@rob, please check your results with version 38.3.0.

@hobbes's issue of notifications at time of hang, might also be related to Bug 1196662 - bug some users are seeing this *without* calendar installed. @Tanja might be the same issue and the notification is just not visible - but @Tanja has no calendar events, so a notification can only be from new mail, not calendar events (so why no hang when calendar is removed - again odd).
Summary: Thunderbird with Lightning add-on enabled freezes after update to version 38.2.0 → Thunderbird 38.2.0 with Lightning add-on enabled, but no calendar events, freezes "(Not Responding)"
Having the same issue. TB 38.3.0, freezes with Lightning 4.0.2.1 and 4.0.3.1. Doesn't freeze when Lightning is disabled. I'm using an Exchange calendar WITH events, and TB hangs whether there's an event notification or not. May or may not be related to new mail notification, though--I always have new mail so I can't tell.

(I'm using the Exchange EWS Provider, freezes happen with either 3.4.0 and 3.5.0-beta. No freeze when the provider is enabled but Lightning is not.)
I have the same issue with 38.6.0 running 64 bit Windows 10. The bug does not appear on 32 bit Windows 10.

Even when writing an email, there is no WYSIWYG, characters displayed severely fall behind what is typed (I can type a whole sentance without it displaying instantly)

Disabling Lightning makes Thunderbird run fine.

Seems like a Windows threading bug as it is only giving Thunderbird one thread.
Should make myself clearer.

Only give one thread to the network. All other requests are stacked until requested data for that instance is uploaded/downloaded. For fast connections, this isn't so obvious.

All the reporters appear to be gone.
And we have several other bugs covering the major issues => incomplete
