Currently user may easily click the sound indicator while trying to switch to pinned tab, because he got used to click in that area. That will cause two additional clicks.
I don't know if it's intentional design, but I have some thoughts about what could be done
1) Move the indicator to the right bottom corner of pinned tab
2) Ctrl(or Shift)(or Alt)+Click switches to pinned tab without changing "Mute/Unmute" state
3) 'smart' CSS transitions to prevent unwanted interaction with the sound indicator
4) Make a simple script/extension that will explore the distribution of clicks in pinned tab's area (30 x 31px). This research can be carried out with ~10 volunteers, I guess, and after that we'll be able say for sure what's the best place for the sound indicator.
(I'll be grateful for link to discussion of this issue, if it exists)

Clearing the needinfo request due to a lack of response on this bug. We've lived with this design since this feature was implemented and I haven't heard any talk towards changing this. At this point this bug should be closed as wontfix.
