Steps to reproduce:
Start Firefox
Do some work in other applications
Actual results:
Firefox crash reporter pops up
Expected results:
no crash

Crashing since some versions (36/37) ago, not fixed with version 40.
Also tried with new empty profile.
Maybe it has something to do that I use an HTTPS proxy also for HTTP like described here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=378637#c68

could you please try without this enabled and post back the results?

Yes, most probably HTTPS proxy is the culprit. I've been using an HTTP proxy now for some days without a crash, and after switching back to HTTPS it crashed again after some hours.
FWIW, the HTTPS proxy is Squid 3.1.23 packaged with and running on CentOS 6.7.
