I've noticed this on Google maps and Gmail. It seems to correspond with layer activity changes. I'm running with APZ

Nope, I don't think it's related to canvas.

I can reproduce it by hovering over the 'GT' train icon in the dialog that comes up below the place you enter your directions start and end.
