I put some music on my SD card. The music app now begins to load it, and hangs.

Which version?
We fixed a bug like that very recently.

Interesting bits from the logs:
10-04 15:22:11.417 317 603 W AutoMounter: The following files are open under '/storage/sdcard1'
10-04 15:22:11.417 317 603 W AutoMounter: PID: 1924 file: '/storage/sdcard1/Chaotic Nation/._01 End of Silence.m4a' app: 'Music' comm: 'Music' exe: '/system/b2g/b2g'
So likely the same bug with fixed. Thanks to the MacOS.

Given that your post on the mailing list indicate that you run an "old" version (this include the latest on the Sony Z3C), marking as dupe of bug 1191760.
Current workaround is to remove the "._*" files that MacOS insist on creating on the SDCard.
If after you get the update (not yet available) you still have the bug, feel free to reopen, but then it would be helpful to get the image of the SDcard to reproduce. I'm confident it won't be needed.
