With bug 1173147, users are now prompted before we launch the youtube app to watch a video from private browsing, but ideally we would offer them a way to watch the video in the browser.

snorp, is there anything that would prevent us from doing this?

We're actually working on this with the YouTube folks already. There are a few different bugs around this, but Mike Taylor has been talking to them.

It sounds to me like the real solution would be to just always play YouTube videos in the browser, and never kick people out to the app. In which case UX around fallbacks wouldn't be necessary.

Right, that's the plan. But YouTube has to make that change, not us.

I like the simplicity around this. 

snorp, any idea who is driving this from a product/BD perspective and if we can get YouTube to commit to a date?

I don't know if there is anyone from BD involved, but Mike Taylor has been talking to the YouTube folks. I believe it is deployed for some versions of fennec already.

I don't see this problem on my Fennec.

Yeah, YouTube plays in Fennec these days.
