Details

from a private email:

try this:

"mail picture" from WinXP while NS 6.2.1 is not running; NS 6.2.1 starts up and
trashes the user's mail account settings completely, making all their folders
and email inaccessible

mozilla has nearly the same MAPI code as 6.2.1, so logging this as a mozilla
bug for now.

roc, can you provide any more details? how many 6.x profiles do you have?
where other prefs messed up, or just the mailnews account settings?
Severity: normal → critical
OS: Windows 2000 → Windows XP
This was my friend's setup, so I don't have complete details on hand...

> how many 6.x profiles do you have?

I think he just had one.

> where other prefs messed up, or just the mailnews account settings?

Not sure, but I *think* other prefs were also destroyed.

Only prefs were affected; copying a backup of the prefs file over prefs.js seems
to fix things completely. Both the bug and the repair are 100% reproducible on
his system. If NS is already running when he does the "mail picture", everything
seems to work fine.
I talked to my friend again last night. He says his profile gets trashed if he
just starts up two instances of Netscape, so this may not be MAPI-specific.
This may have just happened to me on 9/23 commercial branch build on Win2K

I had closed down without shutting down.
I tried launching the build upon starting up. Nothing happened so I clicked the
icon again. Nothing.

So I went to see if there were processes running and there were 2 running. So I
ended one.

Then the browser started up with no profile :-((((((
this is the profile corruption problem - I don't think it has to do with MAPI,
except that MAPI might keep an instance of Netscape around -> dup of 155080,
which I'm starting to suspect is not really fixed. Conrad, is this supposed to
be fixed on the trunk? And how do we get two instances running at the same time?

Bug 155080 and the original scenario in this bug is specifically for the
prefs.js file of the last used profile getting re-written so that the profile
lost all it's pointers to mail and address books. Susie and John Gorham
experienced the Profile Manager not finding the profiles, they are there with
the correct prefs.js files but the app can't find the profile. In John's case
he did not have Quick Launch on and as a rule unchecks the box during
installation. I'll check Susie's system to see if her prefs.js file is still ok.

OK, I checked out Susie's system. She had prefs.js corruption not missing
Profiles as originally reported. John Gorham's problem was not the same as
Susies's. And unforntunately this happened to Susie with the 9-23 branch
build, which should have had the 155080 fix and she had multiple profiles which
should have protected her from bug 155080. During testing of 155080 fix, I was
not able to bring up 2 incidents of Netscape so I'm not sure why you can now in
the branch 9/23 build. That is a test case we could not verify the fix against.
I am opening susie's portion of this bug as a new bug because she ran into it
after the bug fix for 155080 and requires new steps to reproduce. The comments
before susie's look to be with builds before the 155080 fix went in, based on
that leaving as dup of 155080.
