Details
NSPR has a .def file listing the symbols meant to be exported, grouped into versions… but it's used only on OS/2 and Solaris, which are no longer common platforms, so mistakes can fail to be noticed for a relatively long time, as in bug 1209397.
NSS uses a similar versioning / export control mechanism, and supports many more platforms. Copying over the makefile declarations seems as if it should be relatively easy; maintaining compatibility with earlier non-versioned releases could be harder.
