Gecko/20020129
BuildID: 2002012903
When opening the page, Mozilla does not apply the style sheets.
Page renders well in Internet Explorer 5.5
w3c.org CSS Validator validates CSS.
HTML Validator validates HTML, except for some missing alt-tags in images.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open page in mozilla
Actual Results: Just page content is rendered, no style sheets applied
Expected Results: Style sheets should be applied

The Content-Type provided by the server for the stylesheet is text/html, not
text/css. This is wrong.
The DOCTYPE specified forces page to be laid out in Strict mode. Which makes
Mozilla ignore this stylesheet.
If you want for this stylesheet to work, either fix it's content-type, or make a
page that is laid out in Quirks mode which will forgive this error.

Well, first off all I have to thank you for your comment, as it helped me to
fix the problem.
On the other hand, isn't this too nitpicking?
The style sheet used in this page is generated via PHP4, therefore the name of
the style sheet file is stylesheets.css.php - that's why, I guess, the server
didn't send a text/css header but a text/html header.
So what I had to do is to embed a php command making the server send a text/css
header - that solved the problem. There was nothing wrong with the style sheet,
though, only the header. Shouldn't Mozilla be able to tolerate that?

Well, mozilla _is_ able to tolerate it. Doing so is a violation of the HTTP
specification, however (and there are cases when that can actually matter). So
we tolerate it in quirks mode and don't tolerate it in standards mode. Your
page triggers standards mode.
We _should_ provide an error indication, however; that's bug 113399.
Marking this bug fixed since the sheet is now applied.
