In bug 1201534 it was decided that addons cannot be installed via direct links but the error message is, "Fennec prevented an add-on from installing on your device." This should be improved to give the workaround of pushing an HTML page containing a link to the page, or even opening a web page that explains how to do it.
We should do this. I recently tried installing an addon by typing in the URL manually and it kept failing for no obvious reason. I wasn't the only one running into this problem either.

Yep, spent a long time in config trying to figure out how to get this to work. Was quite confused 'cause that's how I install APKs, and I'd never had an issue with them. Would the XPI install have worked if I had downloaded it locally in another browser, then chosen to open in Firefox?
