spun off from bug 105537, as i was confused since control+enter [command+enter on mac] in the urlbar does not open the url in a new window. right now, at least on linux and mac, it merely loads the url in the current browser window. [doesn't do anything on win32 due to bug 50255.] so, this is just an rfe to implement ctrl+enter/cmd+enter to open the url into a new window. cc'ing relevant ppl for their input as to whether or not we should do this at all. usual questions: if implemented, should this be default behavior, and have no pref to control it? if there's a pref, is it worth having a front-end pref ui for it?

see bug 123415 for clarification of the tabbed browser pref.
Yes, it should be implemented. No, I can see no reason for controlling it by a pref. If Tabs are enabled, Ctrl-Enter should open a new Tab. If they are disabled Ctrl-Enter should open a new window. Why is there a need for a pref to enable/disable it? As long as Enter always opens in the current Tab (if enabled) or window. IMHO, when Tabbed Browsing is enabled, Tabs replace Windows.

Sorry, but that's not how people I've talked to use tabs (and not how I use
them). People tend to use multiple windows, one per task, and open all pages
related to a task as tabs in the corresponding window...
