I'll attach one "good" and one "bad" screenshots, in successive builds of Firefox. The difference is striking.

Last good build:
UA:"Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0" (en-US) ID:20160106030225 CSet:9d6ffc7a08b6b47056eefe1e652710a3849adbf7
This is the Firefox 46.0a1 nightly dated Jan. 6.

First bad build:
UA:"Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:46.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/46.0" (en-US) ID:20160107025207 CSet:e0bcd16e1d4b99ba3e542149d0d41e0f60c54b5c
This is an hourly (a "tinderbox-build") dated Jan. 7.

Both of these were taken in the same profile. The upgrade/downgrade happens as follows:
- the .tar.bz2 files are in different subfolders (one per build) of ~/.download/mozilla/firefox
- To switch:
1. Wait until there is no running "firefox" process visible by ps
2. make sure that the current dir is the one containing the build to be installed
3. rm -Rv /usr/local/firefox && tar -jxvf firefox-46.0a1.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2 -C /usr/local || echo 'exit status' $?
IOW, remove the installdir then re-create it from the .tar.bz2.
If you use Classic Theme Restorer try installing latest dev version ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/472577/versions/#version-1.4.6beta9 ). The "Show add-on version" feature was busted by (I think) bug #1209344. See Mozillazine topic "The Official Win32 20160108 builds are not yet out" ( http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=2983211 ).

Make that bug #1220564 instead.

I've just looked at the stdout/stderr logs, and they are practically identical.
One thing which may or may not be relevant: at the latest version update (after temporarily installing an aurora build then coming back) I was presented with a list of add-ons supposedly all installed by me. The two that I didn't recognise, viz. "Hello" and "Pocket", are now user-disabled. For some reason I don't see them in about:addons.

Right the first time, I guess. Back to bug #1209344 (I'll quit spamming now).

I don't us the Classic Theme Restorer. I'll have a look at _both_ bugs mentioned in comment #4 and 5, keeping in mind that one of them may be irrelevant. I'll temporarily disable the "Add-ons Manager - Version Number" add-on to see if it makes a difference but I hope that add-on will work again ASAP.
Stay tuned to this channel: more news is coming.

Ah, there: "Add-ons manager is busted with today's build": http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?p=14467475#p14467475
What they describe is exactly what I see.
But: After disabling "Add-ons Manager - Version Number" about:addons looks OK, even in the hourly.
Let's post this, then go back to that Mozillazine forum thread.

I assume you meant to close this since it is caused by an add-on?

While I was reading (and writing) that forum thread, an update came for the culprit extension. I re-enabled it (it is restartless), my version numbers came back, and no bustage. Yayay \o/ The "good" version of the add-on is Add-ons Manager - Version Number 1.0.7.

Marking unaffected for 46 since this wasn't a Firefox bug.
