Details

Reproducible on:
- Aurora 45.0a2 (2016-01-07)
- Nightly 46.0a1 (2016-01-07)
- 44.0b7 (20160107144911)
- 43.0.4 (20160105164030)
- 43.0.1 (20151216175450)
and older (e.g. 35.0.1)

Affected platforms:
- Windows 8 x64
- Windows 10 x86
- Windows 7 x64

Steps to reproduce:
1. Install the latest QuickTime build (7.7.9) from https://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
2. Launch Firefox and open about:plugins.
3. Open http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/ or any website that provides video content via QuickTime plug-in.
4. Play any video from that website.

Expected result:
- QuickTime is displayed in about:plugins.
- Video content is being played back properly.

Actual result:
- QuickTime is not displayed in about:plugins.
- The "Get QuickTime" notification is displayed instead of playing back the video.

Additional notes:
- This seems like an external issue, related to the plugin itself.
- The bug is reproducible on any Firefox version while using this specific QuickTime version (7.7.9).

You should install "QuickTime Web Plugin" which is not installed by default.
[Tracking Requested - why for this release]: While this is possibly a problem from Apple, I think it can have a bad impact on users. Note that this happens with the latest Quicktime version released yesterday, available on the official download page. Any user that installs/updates to this version on Windows will not be able to run QuickTime content... not sure how many people would be affected, but it's possible that Firefox would get the blame for the broken functionality.
Andrei can you confirm that this is WORKSFORME?

I can give it a try but where do I install the "QuickTime Web Plugin" from?

Choose "Custom" on install dialog
And then enable "QuickTime Web Plugin" to install
Thanks Alice! You are absolutely right, if I choose Custom install and then also select "QuickTime Web Plugin", then QuickTime shows in about:plugins, and works as expected. So in this scenario of a custom install this is indeed a WORKSFORME.

One difference that I saw is that on standard install there is no "Plugins" folder in the QuickTime installation folder, while after custom install and selection of "QuickTime Web Plugin" there is one.

Given the above, how bad would this be for us?

We do not believe that quicktime is an important market factor in any case, and with the custom install option it's still available for consumers who really need it for the next year until we remove support ourself. It's obviously not going to work in Edge or Chrome.
