Crash Data

User Story

See comment 10, the "Expand to current folder" option in Explorer seems to be causing this crash.
User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:44.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/44.0
Build ID: 20160123151951

Steps to reproduce:

Go to any page that has any link to upload a file, facebook is a major one for example. Click that link. Firefox crashes.

Actual results:

Go to any page that has any link to upload a file, facebook is a major one for example. Click that link. Firefox crashes.

Expected results:

Go to any page that has any link to upload a file, facebook is a major one for example. Click that link. Firefox opens a dialog with your drives & files, you pick one to upload and everything works.
Been like this since at least 43, surprised there's no bug posted yet. I've tried fresh profiles & complete reinstalls of firefox.

Do you have crash report links in the page about:crashes?
Flags: needinfo?(paulbagrie)
One or two were throttled, and I pruned a couple with 'colourful' user comments. Then for good measure I generated a couple of new ones. These don't seem to show that I'd tried reinstalling, I'm sure I did, maybe I didn't submit crash reports before that? I certainly didn't submit all crashes, I've been using a file drop plugin as a work around; at one point I'd even deleted the crash reporter because I was sick of it popping up so often.

Wow, you have a bunch of add-ons in your profile!

Are you able to reproduce the crash with a clean profile?
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles
Hi,

I didn't managed to reproduce this issue on the latest release(44.0.1) nor the latest Nightly(47.0a1).

User Agent: User Agent Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:44.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/44.0
Build ID: 20160205155049

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:47.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/47.0
Build ID: 20160210071115

Due to the fact that the issue is reproducible for the reporter I will assign a component and perhaps there's someone with extensive knowledge on this area that might be able to help here.

Thank you,
Vlad

I didn't realise there was an update. Still crashes on 44.0.2: https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/83c273e9-dd4f-45cc-88cc-49d4c2160211
FOUND SOLUTION: It turns out disabling "Expand to current folder" in the windows navigation pane fixes the issue.

Backstory: firefox started crashing whenever I tried to download something as well on trying to upload. I gave up and went to chrome for awhile - and then found I had the same problem there too. I'm not sure where I found the solution, although looking for it in relation to chrome this time I did find it, but wherever it was they reckoned it affected all browsers.

Not sure if firefox could stop this crashing from it's end, so I'm not touching this bugs flags.

Any way to move this info to the top of the bug, give anyone else with the same issue and looking here a heads up?
Are you sure the cause is not a 3rd-party application like folder manager on something like that, installed on your computer?
I am now after checking. I:

Killed programs with explorer.exe hooks (possibly not all) & killed/restarted explorer.exe, turned "expand to current folder" on: crashes:
https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/9a072347-1e08-4336-b2e5-8bccb2160604

Rebooted windows in safe mode (network), turned "expand to current folder" on: crashes:
https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/91a2150b-e989-4b91-a99b-ec7f52160604

While in windows safe mode, "expand to current folder" on, restarted firefox in safe mode: crashes, and messed up my toolbars:
https://crash-stats.mozilla.com/report/index/b88af8ca-5dea-4677-a234-97ffa2160604

That's as clean and sure as I can get without reinstalling windows.
Note: I'm not using 46.0.1 because it fragged one of my plugins and I didn't have time to deal with it at the time so I downgraded. Now I can't remember which plugin & I can't be bothered with sorting it out.
