Details
build 2002020406 (0.9.8) on Win2000
I was looking thru my mail, and clicked on a message in the thread pane (this
selected the first message). I then clicked on a second message, and this
message was selected, but the first message also remained selected. No keyboard
modifiers or accelerators were pressed. I hit each modifier (shift, control,
alternate) hard to ensure they weren't stuck down, and did some basic stuff like
opened up Notepad to make sure I wasn't typing in all caps.
When clicking without a modifier, only the most recently selected message should
be selected/hilighted.
I'll bet I can't reproduce this. :-(

I'm still seeing this.
This is basic GUI stuff that should never happen.

I've seen something like this several times, but what I saw was a drawing
problem rather than a selection problem. I noticed that if I switched to
another window and back, the extra selected items would no longer appear to be
selected. Also, clicking one of the selected messages would not remove it from
the selection, like I would expect if mozmail thought I was holding the Ctrl key.

Yes, you're correct. If multiple items appear to be selected, pressing delete
will only actually delete one message (the one that's truely selected), so it's
drawing not selection.
Changing the summary to something more appropriate (hopefully the new summary
makes sense).
Summary: multiple selection even when no modifiers pressed → some messages appear to be selected when they are not

Equally worrying:
If I'm using threaded view mode, and I select the top-most message in the thread
by moving up or down using the arrow keys (presumably this works with the mouse
as well), then I shift-down arrow to the bottom of the thread, all of the thread
is selected (as shown by pressing delete), but the top-most message is actually
not shown as highlighted.
win32 build 2002022603, win98se (Classic, in case that matters)
Still seeing this behavior, and it is indeed a painting problem. I haven't seen
it in mail, but do while in newsgroups (view threads with unread). It doesn't
start happening immediately, but once it starts, it keeps happening until I shut
down mail-news. So far I can't find any pattern that sets it off. Can somebody
either confirm this bug or mark it as a duplicate?
Incidentally, I'm seeing painting problems with link underlines in plain text
message bodies, too. May be related, maybe not.
