Stored password is forgotten when POP mailbox is locked

Details
On Mozilla 0.9.8 release version, Linux 2.4 (Red Hat 7.2), installed from
talkback full tarball
If a POP3 mailbox is locked because POP is in use by another client, and hence
Mozilla cannot get POP access, it will incorrectly assume this is because the
stored password is wrong, forget it and force the user to re-enter it. The
password dialog appears with the error message from the POP server, the password
reset to blank, and the option to store it in Password Manager changed to unchecked.
To reproduce:
1. Set up Mozilla to read a POP mailbox with "leave messages on server", and use
Password Manager to store the password
2. Set up another mail client, e.g. Netscape Communicator 4.7, for the same
mailbox, with regular POP (uncheck leave messages on server)
3. Fill the box with lots of mail, or use a dialup so it will take a while to fetch
4. Hit Get Msgs in Mozilla to bring it up to date
5. Hit Get Msg in Communicator, and while it is still clearing the mailbox, hit
Get Msgs again in Mozilla
