Opening this tracking bug to aid in keeping track of bugs/features that
currently use opening new windows or same window options that would benefit from
adding it into tab browsing preferences to allow users to 'open them in new
tabs' like current tab browser preferences.
Maybe we should do a more indepth tab browsing perfs for all these type
eventually, I really like the idea of using tabs before having to open new
windows for things like search, and opening stuff in the same window, I usually
dont want it to put it there so I still open a new tab, then run some of these
things.
'Opening in New Tab' - Tab browsing perf options should be used the more we find
cases like this are the way to go with this kinda stuff.
Noting comments from recent bug 122162 that spurred the need to track this:

that's a good catch. generally, our policy is to open a new window for just
about everything. the only exceptions are for following internal links in a page.
------- Additional Comment #8 From karen j. bowen 2002-02-12 23:57 -------
actually, a new tab would be more preferable to me - I have only recently
started using tabs, but find them fantastic for keeping related pages together.
------- Additional Comment #10 From Samir Gehani 2002-02-13 13:28 -------
Marlon,
Regarding comment 2, we don't open a new window for bookmarks, history, sidebar
search results, or what's related links. They are all opened in the same
window. However, context menu items usually open a view of some other data
(e.g., page info, page source, view stored data, etc.) so those do open in a new
window. Could you cite some examples of what you meant when you said we open a
new window for just about everything. Also, do you think we should just open a
new tab in the case of the search context menu item? It'll help users discover
tabbed browsing and seems to be reasonable since the page is related to the
originating page (i.e., page with search term highlighted).
------- Additional Comment #11 From Peter Trudelle 2002-02-13 22:23 -------
No, we don't want naiive users to discover tabs like that; what I meant was
that this should be another case in the tab prefs for users who have already
opted in to using tabs for such things.
------- Additional Comment #12 From Samir Gehani 2002-02-16 16:34 -------
Marlon,
Do we have a design for how this context menu item ties into tabs? I'll file a
new bug on modifying the search results' target to be tab-aware once we have a
spec. Thanks.

Before posting to this bug please read these comments here in this section
before starting useless discussions about wanting 'open in new tab' instead of
windows for feature x.
Some stuff is probably for the time being going to stay seperate from tabs like
Task items & Tools.. this bug will track stuff that doesn't necessary help the
user to have it be in a new or same browser window.
Feel free to add depencies for bugs that fall into this category. Will leave
this mostly to developer specs, info and developers to discuss tracking & changes.
Thank you.
