https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/the-addon-bar/ adds a toolbar where addon buttons can be accessed. The toolbar is displayed in the "Customize Firefox" page and has a default shortcut to toggle (Cmd + / on OSX).

Hmm the addon is now working, unsure what changed.

With Firefox 57 only WebExtensions are permitted and are, by default, e10s compatible.
