In nightly, I added a new search engine (qwant.com), changed the default search engine to qwant. Restarted nightly. Works as expectedin nightly.
I added the nightly search widget on my homescreen.
I use it to search things and it doesn't work with qwant (empty page). Butit works with Google oor yahoo (pre-installed with nightly). It should also work with any additional search engine.
Nightly version:
20160510030240
Mozilla/5.0 (Android 5.1.1; Tablet; rv:49.0) Gecko/49.0 Firefox/49.0
Android device: Sony z3 tablet compact sgp611. Android 5.1.1

Sounds like a dupe of bug 1131087.

Not exactly, because I get results for all preinstalled search engines (google, yahoo, bing, twitter, wikipedia fr (I live in France)). I have to close Nightly to reset the default search engine in the widget, but that's another problem.
When I install a new search engine (I tested with linguee.fr and qwant.com), it works normally in the URL bar: it provides a page of results as expected.
But if I use the search widget (the thing that you can add to your homescreen in Android), there's a blank page (no apparent activity, no search result...).

Apparently, it was fixed during the last 13 months. I don't remember when exactly.
Works for me, I suppose
