Currently we only show the media notification (bug 1264901) on devices with Android Lollipop or higher:

Could we support older version of Android too? Newer versions of the support library come with a NotificationCompat.MediaStyle:
https://developer.android.com/reference/android/support/v7/app/NotificationCompat.MediaStyle.html

So at least from Android frontend side we should be able to support older versions of Android with a new version of the support library too.

I thought I already documented that in some bug: Yes, this should be possible. There's not only NotificationCompat.MediaStyle but also MediaSessionCompat and MediaControllerCompat.
