User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.3; WOW64; rv:50.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/50.0
Build ID: 20160618030212

Steps to reproduce:

The following GIF image is animated properly in IE and Chrome, but not in Firefox 50.0a1 (2016-06-18).

Severity: normal → major
OS: Unspecified → Windows 8.1
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64
Is the problem reproducible if the animated gif image is inside a webpage?

Is the problem also reproducible for you in Firefox 47 (stable release)?

At this point, there is no reason to set the severity of this bug report to major. No crash, no data loss, no leakage, no hang, alpha version only, no obvious justification, etc...

When I use Firefox 50.0a1 buildID=20160618024606, I also notice and confirm that the animation does not occur. My about:config's image.animation_mode is set to normal and image permission is set to allow. When I use Firefox 47 (stable release; buildID=20160606114208), the animation occurs: I get expected result.

At this point, this behavior could be intentional and part of/related to another bug fixed. Right now, we need to search for a possible duplicate...
