Its sometimes hard for developers to know what sheriff is on duty. Some sheriffs add |sheriffduty on their irc nick, some don't. In order to make it more easier (and it raises also visibility), treeherder should have a field like "sheriff on duty is: [tomcat, kwierso,#developers]" on the top pane (maybe next to the repos you have open). So when a sheriff is on duty she/he can add the name or change it after duty etc

I think editing some field may still be too much thing for all sheriffs to do for all the time. It should probably be as simple as a single button so that whenever you see it, you just push it, and everything is done in that one click. I believe you all need to login to treeherder to get sheriff permission, right?
I think this would be best done in Treestatus. Treeherder could then poll this field along with the tree statuses. We could add a button to the sheriffing panel that submits something to Treestatus to automatically update this field. In fact, we already have a bug for part of this.

I'm ok for any ways to let developers know what sheriff is on duty, I'll follow your decision. However, it's a great idea if there's a button to push, and update "sheriff on duty".

As Wes said, this would be best stored/updated in TreeStatus IMO -- see the previous discussion in bug 1144589. If someone adds that field to TreeStatus, Treeherder can then pull from that API and display in the UI.

How would this be updated for someone coming on duty and going off duty? what happens if there are no paid sheriffs? The idea sounds ok but the implementation needs a think about.
