User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; WOW64; rv:48.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/48.0
Build ID: 20160726073904
Steps to reproduce:
1. Type search term or url into location bar, e.g. "somethingsomething.com" at a reasonable speed
2. Press enter
Actual results:
Location bar starts searching for whatever similar things to populate the drop-down list. There is a SIGNIFICANT delay of up to 1000ms. If <Enter> is pressed during this delay, there is no effect. Result is that I have to wait for this search to complete and only THEN can I search the typed-in words or URL.
Expected results:
What should have happened is that Firefox 48 should never have introduced this "Visit" entry in the drop-down whenever something is typed into the location bar. It is clear that ever since this has been introduced, the delay comes and causes a massive amount of disruption in work-flow. It is extremely frustrating.
I also fail to see the reason for this feature to exist. A user types in to either search something or visit a webpage. The suggestion "Visit <url>" or "Visit <query>" is redundant because one presses <Enter>, and always has, in order to carry out the exact same thing the "Visit" suggestion suggests.
Why must users now instead of quickly pressing <Enter>, have to add more steps in order to do something so simple?
I should add that the "Visit" suggestion only comes after the lag, so it's not like anyone can press-down to begin with, which is yet another redundant action.

I have tested this issue on Windows 10 x64 with the latest Firefox release (48.0) and the latest Nightly (51.0a1-20160809030200) and could not reproduce it.
After typing a search term or an url into location bar at reasonable speed, I was able to press enter after finishing typing and the desired webpage had opened without any delay.
Can you please retest this using the latest Nightly build (https://nightly.mozilla.org/) and report back the results? When doing this, please use a new clean Firefox profile, maybe even safe mode, to eliminate custom settings as a possible cause (https://goo.gl/PNe90E).
Also could you post a screen recording when encountering the issue in order for us to understand it better?
Feel free to use https://screencast-o-matic.com/screen_recorder if you like.
