Details
A few patches landed to make PopupNotifications.jsm support the edge cases caused by notifications icons in SocialAPI chat windows and detached chat windows.
Now that SocialAPI has been removed (bug 1289549), we can revert some of the changes that contribute to making PopupNotifications.jsm look more complicated than it really needs to be.
Bug 1194706 is the most recent example I've noticed of a change made to support SocialAPI/Hello, but there are others; finding them will require reading the hg log of PopupNotifications.jsm
