This works around some of the random failures mentioned in bug 1319650 comment 27, which are likely due to a known GTK bug on Ubuntu 12.04.

I have a patch and I would like these changes for other reasons also, but there are no other known pressing symptoms, and there are some additional failures on Ubuntu 12.04 when mixed with changes for bug 1319650.
