Steps to reproduce:

I'm running Firefox Nightly 53.0a1 (2016-12-16) (64-bit) on Windows 10 that I often don't touch for a few days. Often when I resume, I'll get an alert something like "Firefox was unable to apply the update, click to download a full update" 


Actual results:

Then the "Software Update" dialog shows (see screenshot)
  Downloading Nightly
  [empty gray progress bar?] (>)
  Connecting to the update server...

This window never progresses.

If I bring up Help > About Nightly, that dialog shows [Restart Nightly to Update]. So I think some update is actually successful.

%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates\ contains only a folder named A3710B8EBB50CD3, which contains another updates folder, active-update.xml and updates.xml all dated 2016-12-18 12:33. %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates\A3710B8EBB50CD3\updates contains backup-update.log and last-update.log from 2016-12-18 and a 0 folder dated today (2016-12-20).
C:\Users\spage\AppData\Local\Mozilla\updates\A3710B8EBB50CD3\updates\0 contains a 53MB update.mar from 2016-12-18 and update.status and update.version files, both from today, both containing "null".

I'm not sure if the key issue is my laptop going into hibernation, or being hibernated for days, or what.


Expected results:

The Downloading Nightly should show some sign of progress one way or another.

This has happened several times in the last few months.
