Hi Stefan, can you confirm?

This should be triaged. Mike can you do that?
Flags: needinfo?(michael.l.comella)
[triage] Non-critical: we have a small number of unique casters: https://sql.telemetry.mozilla.org/queries/50549/source Assuming all casts go through "cast.1" telemetry action.

I will notify sumo this may not be working as expected, however.

Just wanted to let you know that I am experiencing same issue.

Firefox for Android 58.0.2
Galaxy S8 US Unlocked (Android 8.0 Oreo beta)

When I go to Youtube or Kissanime.ru html5 player loads but there is no cast button. Casting works from Google Chrome for Android and Web Video Caster (Android app which is basically a browser + more features related to casting)

Thanks
Emir

Hi, maybe it is small as we cannot use it. When I first tried to cast from Firefox it didn't work and the workarround I found whas to use Chrome (just for casting). I mainly use it for gogoanime.io, animeflv.net or jkanime.net

I found this bug by chance one month ago just because I was checking translations in the app and opened SuMo for testing a feature.
Re-triaging per https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1473195

Needinfo :susheel if you think this bug should be re-triaged.

I have to say that I feel very sad to have this issue on FF 68.4.1, official Android 9.0, Samsung Galaxy S9+. In 2020, more than three years (and more than 10 versions) after this bug was reported. I feel shame for FF devs ;(

Casting works well with the same setup (tried with VPN connection on and off, both works) when I use Youtube app, Chrome or
https://github.com/timusus/Shuttle that is a small and open-source Android app.

More or less casting only worked in a very limited set of circumstances. It required a html video element that provided direct access to the media (eg wikipedia). It will not work on many common video hosting sites because of MSE bug 1417087#c9.

It sounds like Shuttle deals with files that are local on the device. That is quite a bit different than the restrictions created by MSE.

Firefox for Android is not receiving any new work. Firefox Preview is where new work is happening. https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues/3068 exists to support casting.

Kevin, thank you very much for your message. I am doing my best to move back to Firefox (after years with Chrome) on Android, iOS, and macOS...and; it is hard with all the issues and bugs. Five different FF apps in PlayStore and I didn’t know that the one that looks stable is at the end of its lifetime. There is no information about what to download. Thank you for this one.

Yes, Shuttle deals with offline media. I suggested another project (https://github.com/kiwibrowser/android) in the GitHub issue you pointed out. Thanks!

Product: Firefox for Android → Firefox for Android Graveyard

Using Firefox preview/nightly and setting browser.casting.enabled under about:config doesnt work to enable casting to a Chromecast from any video. Wanted to move over from Chrome on desktop and Android to Firefox but this is a deal breaker. Looks like bug has been logged 5 years ago. I would say the days for Firefox are drawing to an end.

Firefox removed Casting to Roku and Chromecast in v68. The feature you want is tracked in https://github.com/mozilla-mobile/fenix/issues/3068 Bugzilla is no longer used for Firefox on Android.
