After upgrading to Mozilla 0.9.9 (from 0.9.7) I discovered that I could no longer connect to my company's news server. It appears that Mozilla News is attempting to connect via the proxy, but there is no 'News Proxy' setting. As our proxy doesn't seem to cope with this (or more likely has this blocked on purpose), the work around is to 'no proxy for "news.domain.com"'. There ought to be a setting somewhere for en/disabling proxing for news. Simon.
It seems that Mail/news is not using the dont use proxy for these addresses section of the proxy config. I have a problem where it gets my mail from outside but cant send via the internal SMTP server as it is using the proxy when it should not.
Simon, what happens if you enter your fully qualified domain name of the news server into the 'No Proxy For' section of Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Proxies?
This would require an architecture change, that I think is covered by bug 51472. Ben will correct me if I'm wrong ;-)
MailNews should only obey the "SOCKS" and "No Proxy" fields. If the contents of the other fields affect your connectivity, clear them to verify the problem. This would be a bug. As for making proxy preferences more robust for Mail News users, I think you really want bug 89928.

reopening. Bug 89928 is an enhancement, this is a bug. It's not yet decided, if bug 89928 will be fixed at all or when.

setting 'No Proxy For' section of Edit | Preferences | Advanced | Proxies is the workaround that I was suggesting. I think the main issue for me was that I had the SOCKS Proxy set, and there news was trying to connect via this proxy server. This fails, presumably because of how the proxy is set up (this is a M$ based system at work so I have no control over it). I've removed the 'SOCKS Proxy' setting (and the workaround 'don't proxy') and things are working OK. Simon.
Simon, are you satisfied that entering your news server in the 'no proxy for' field is okay? There are RFEs floating around out there suggesting other solutions, but this is currently as it was designed...
when I enter 'news.mcom.com' into the 'no proxy for:' field, this worksforme with build 2002-05-17 on Windows 2000 with a SOCKS 5 server.
