Windows 10, 52.0b2, BuildId: 20170130065342, Multiprocess Windows: 0/3(Disabled)

STR:
Use gmail in any of the tabs.

AR: Sometimes, when you an open email thread, the buttons at the top don't get rendered properly. They are just empty.

ER: Buttons like "Report spam", "Delete" show up as expected.
It's not a page load/slowness issue, these buttons just never show up, even after I wait for a long time. When I hover over the button, the tool tip shows up correctly.
Tab refresh fixes the problem and the buttons show up as expected.

Too late for firefox 52, mass-wontfix.
Hey Ritu, is this still happening for you? I haven't been able to reproduce.

Hi Mike, it isn't a problem anymore. I am on the latest Beta53 build.

Thanks Ritu. Let's close, but please comment or re-open if you notice it popping up again. Thanks!

I have been experiencing this Gmail button problem intermittently starting about 1-2 months ago in Firefox Nightly 62. The button icons are loaded from a sprite map [1], so maybe the sprite map fails to load from cache or network?

I don't have STR but :heycam and I have both seen a similar problem where Google Calendar's buttons are rendered as Unicode replacement characters [2] because an icon font probably failed to load.

I filed bug 1470373 for that; feel free to dupe it here if it's the same as this bug.

I've seen this in the past, but it really seems to have increased in frequency lately. With Nightly 74 (may have started in 73), I get this almost daily now (added screenshot).

This smells more like a graphics issue to me...

Component: Layout → Graphics

I am experiencing a similar issue. Attaching a devtools screenshot that emilio did on my computer. I believe he has more info on what's going on at least in my case.

Yeah, so these are all background images that become transparent when the tab is left on the background for a bit, somehow...

Andreas mentioned on slack that Webrender is disabled.

Priority: -- → P3

Tim, Andrew: do you know what could cause this? Images getting discarded too aggressively or something? How could we diagnose this further?

If this is not happening to non-WebRender users, and it is on Windows, Mac or Android (not Linux), then one major difference is the use of volatile memory. This has caused similar issues in the past.

If you do not have WebRender enabled (confirm in about:support, see the entry "Compositing" under Graphics), please change image.mem.volatile.min_threshold_kb to be something very large, e.g. 524288. This will force you to use the regular heap for allocations below 512MB instead of volatile memory. Please report back on whether or not the problem goes away.

If you do have WebRender enabled, please chime in because that suggests it is a completely different problem.

See comment 16, maybe you can help if you see it every day :).

I confirmed I do not have webrender enabled (Windows 10) and I have changed the pref you mentioned. I will report back in a few days.

Flags: needinfo?(mconca)

I don't have WebRender enabled either (macOS 10.15) and have changed the pref as well.

I can still reproduce with image.mem.volatile.min_threshold_kb being set to 524288.

Attached image image.png

I can also reproduce with image.mem.volatile.min_threshold_kb set to 524288. A couple of new things to note:

  • this happened immediately after a reboot this time (Nightly was updated)
  • my background image also disappeared, replaced by black (see attached)
  • clicking away to a few different tabs and then back to email restored everything (this has never happened before)

Slightly different problem but I'll comment on this bug first before opening a new one. My personal gmail has a background with a sun (top left corner) and a tree (bottom left) and I've noticed these turning back recently (since the holidays). I have seen this problem on Windows and MacOS (WR off). If I hover over the black (e.g. mouse is over Snoozed) then it shows up.

Screenshot snippet attached.

This is now happening in slack as well.
